Seventeen-year-old Neeraja from a village in South Karnataka was married at the age of sixteen.

“My husband was skeptical to send me out of the house. We got married early because my mother wanted me to settle down fast” said Neeraja.

When the organisation PMSR introduced interventions as part of the Initiative for Married Adolescent Girls Empowerment (IMAGE) supported by Terre des Hommes Netherlands (TdH-NL), Neeraja was afraid of them.

“I used to hide in fear when staff from PMSR would come to visit us. I was scared that they were going to complain to the police. Gradually, I started attending their programmes and began to trust them. One day, they called for enrollment to a computer skills training programme.”, said Neeraja. “It took a while to convince my husband because the training was in the nearby village.”

Once Neeraja enrolled herself in the computer training organised by PMSR with support from Tdh-NL, there was no looking back. “I enrolled for the training program in June 2019. Before I didn’t know how to switch on or switch off the computer. Now, after the program, I can type in English and Kannada, use MS Paint, write on MS Word and perform the operations of addition and multiplication on MS Excel.”, said a happy Neeraja. “Before I was clueless, now I’m confident.”

The training programme was for a period of four months from Monday to Saturday between 10 am and 1pm. Neeraja’s certificate is being processed and she is excited to receive it. She plans to take up a data entry job at a hospital or a shop.
